I just thought i would comment on todays radio newsday.

I have to admit that after the first newsday i wasn’t really looking foward to this one but i must also admit that eventhough it was a real rush to get everything done in what felt like ten minutes i throughly enjoyed it.

When we were first given the task to produce a two minute radio bulletin in about 40 mins i really didn’t think that this was going to be possible but we did make it and we managed to make it back to TAB 9 ten minutes early which my group was really pleased about.

It gave me a real taste of what it would be like if i did go onto work in radio journalism.I much prefer this side of journalism to the print newsday we did at the end of last term. this day has proved to me that this is the course for me

Recycling Drinks Cartons

The government is introducing a new scheme where we’d get 10p back for each each drinks carton we recycle.

The CPRE say each household disposes of 500 plastic bottles each year, and only 130 of these are recycled. The rest end up on streets, fields and in hedgerows.

This scheme would mean drink prices would be raised by 10p but we’d get it back when we recycle. Anybody who finds an empty can or carton can claim the 10p.

The carton recycling process is quite simple and with less rubbish on our streets, it would mean taxpayers won’t have to pay as much.

After recieving many suggestions from the public Winchester City Council have finally announced plans to trial recycling bins along Winchester’s High Street.

The Cities Council hope that these bins will help to reduce the amount of contaminated rubbish which gets put out to be recycled every week.The bins which will be similar to the free-standing ones already in place on the High Street.If the scheme proves to be a success it could be introduced to other cities and towns across Hampshire.

The trial of these bins will take place during the summer.

Recycle for Hampshire is on track to meet its target of recycling and composting 50% of total household waste by 2010.
 
In 2007, Winchester was reported by the WWF as ‘the least green’. Winchester City Council has teamed up with campaign group Recycle for Hampshire as Executive Member for Environment, Mel Kendal said `it was essential to recycle more waste`.
 
Hampshire residents produce approximately 900,000 tonnes of household rubbish each year. The Councils of Hampshire have been awarded £5 million from the government to improve recycling facilities throughout the county.
 
Winchester is the only location which recycles all waste materials in Hants.
 
The city is in partnership with Project Integra – Hampshire’s integrated waste management scheme for the next 25 years.
Executive officer of Project Integra Steve Read said, “We want to help expand the recycling habit from the house and workplace”.
 
Over 1600 recycling banks have been provided for the residents of Hants, and the Winchester City Council has placed recycling bins in student halls at the University of Winchester as they make up almost 10% of the population.
 
First year Winchester Student, Harriet Pollard claimed that “The university is not doing enough to recycle in West Downs Student Village. Bins are only placed by the car park at the very front of West Downs”.
 
Despite government’s best efforts, Hampshire is only ranked 9^th place in composting, with an appalling 7.81% composting rate.
 
Director of Environment, Alison Quant wants to “Ensure recycling services are available a major public sector sites”.
 
Winchester City Council are pleased to see that over 95% of homes now have a kerbside collection of recyclables.
 
There are 26 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) situated in Hampshire, one of which is in Bar End, Winchester. This is the only HWRC which recycles harmful toxic waste alongside domestic recyclables.
 
The recycling rates are steadily increasing in Winchester – 30% of our household waste is recycled – making Hampshire 3^rd best in the country.
 
Winchester City Council aspires to recycle up to 500,000 tons of material through creating awareness with slogans such as “It’s not rubbish – recycle it!”.
 
Spokesman for Recycle for Hampshire Roger Black said, “People who already recycle will be encouraged and reassured that their efforts are worthwhile, and those who do not currently recycle will be able to see it as easy and not just something other people do”.

Fairtrade fortnight in Winchester

BOBBIES out in force this half term ready to confiscate alcohol from anyone under the age of 18, as part of a national home office campaign.

Hampshire Constabulary will be following a focussed operation, as outlined by the Home Office to target young people in possession of alcohol. The national campaign will focus on police forces proactively targeting local areas where youths gather and cause crime and anti – social behaviour.Research undergone by the Home Office revealed that 44 % of young people were identified as binge drinkers, defined as ‘getting very drunk at least once a month.’ However using the powers contained within the Confiscation of Alcohol (Young Persons) Act 1997 and the ‘Directions to Leave’ power under section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006, police can now surrender any alcohol in the possession of an underage drinker, and give a dispersal order to break up gangs of young people who are seen to be causing a nuisance on the streets.Inspector Alistair Nichols, Hampshire Constabulary’s Force Alcohol Harm Reduction Lead said: “Drunken teenagers are more likely to cause criminal damage and anti-social behaviour so police officers across Hampshire and Isle of Wight will be confiscating alcohol from under 18s before the situation gets out of hand.” Police are also using this opportunity to gather information regarding the young people’s ability to access alcohol locally and then follow up with inquiries into the  identified licensed premises or through parents.  It is an offence for adults to buy alcohol for under 18s, they could receive an £80 fixed penalty notice or end up in court and fined up to £5,000. The Home Office campaign is running nationally from 8 to 27 February 2008.

I thought i would add a little more about me because what i wrote last time was really boring.Like i said before i am a first year single honours journalism student funnily enough i do hope to become a journalist in the near future.

Im 19 and i live in Southampton which i have to admit is a bit of a trek to get to uni and is really frustrating when sometimes im only in for an hour it seems a little bit pointless.The reason i didnt move into halls is becasue i thought i would miss home to much and i have to admit that i am kinda regretting it but oh well

I found it extremely useful with regards to learning how the UK constitution has adapted and evolved throughout the centuries. The historical content was well articulated and a good insight into what we will be learning about in the coming year.
